“Happy Mother’s Day!” – we hear and see everywhere today. Some of us are lucky to celebrate with our child(ren), some with their own mother. Some with the whole family, parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, siblings and other relatives and friends celebrating all mothers, grandmothers, step-mothers together.
I am super grateful for my children who make every day special… Being their mom is absolutely the most wonderful experience…
However, at the same time, not all Mother’s Day celebrations are joyful (or “Helemaal Zen” as the card I’ve got from my children says). For some, this day brings up painful memories, grief, or complicated emotions.
Including myself…
Only a few of my closest friends know about my non-existing relationship with my own mother, and all the complex things that had happened prior I had to make this painful decision years ago…
Whether you’ve lost your mother, child, or made the difficult choice to distance yourself, Mother’s Day can be a challenging time.
I know… I can hear you…
Unfortunately, the idealized vision of motherhood doesn’t always reflect the messy realities many of us face. And if you’re navigating this day with a heavy heart, please know your feelings are all valid. Grief, guilt, and self-doubt are all valid and understandable. Be gentle with yourself – and know you are not alone.
Whatever you are feeling and experiencing today, I wish you that you can make peace with your own feelings and emotions…
